I consider Alan Lomax's Global Jukebox project to be among the grandest, and most tragic, of all multimedia projects ever. My view on Alan's vision and background is here ("a textbook study of what's been wrong with interactive multimedia"). It would be almost a no-brainer to revive it as an open-ended online version.
